This specimen was lot 1290 in Sincona sale 22 (Zurich, May 2015), where it sold for 750 CHF (about US$942 including buyer's fees). The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, <blockquote>"''Braunschweig-Grubenhagen, Herzogtum, Philipp II. 1595-1596 Taler 1595. Osterode. Sehr schön.'' ([[Germany]], duchy of Brunswick-Grubenhagen, Philip II (1567-96), thaler of 1595, very fine.)"</blockquote> Brunswick-Grubenhagen was a splinter of the Welf domains in north east Germany, first erected in 1291. It was partitioned and reunited several times. During its final incarnation, it was ruled by brothers Wolfgang and Philip II. On Philip's death, the title lapsed and the territory eventually passed to Brunswick-Calenberg. This type of 1595-96, issued during Philip's brief period of sole rule, is scarce.
