This type was struck 1957, 1965-78, 1982-85 as the communist regime in Poland slowly deteriorated under foreign debt and internal unrest. Some were struck at Kremnica 1975-78, including the specimen shown here, but the rest were made in Warsaw. Most dates are common. A slightly modified obverse (KM Y48.2) was used 1986-87. The denomination was terminated in 1987, inflation having rendered it worthless.
Recorded mintage: 18,600,000 at Kremnica plus 50,020,000 at Warsaw.
Specification: 1.60 g, aluminum, 23 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM Y48.1.
