Jean Elsen sale 115, lot 499
Brabant 1653h ducation rev JElsen 155-499.jpg
Brabant in 1559, from Shepherd's atlas

This specimen was lot 499 in Jean Elsen sale 115 (Brussels, December 2012) where it sold for €140 (about US$214 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Philippe IV (1621-1665), AR ducaton, 1653, Anvers. Deuxième type. Droit: B. drapé et cuirassé à droite. Revers: Ecu couronné, tenu par deux lions. En dessous, le bijou de la Toison d'or. Frappe faible. Ex HSA 2492. Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, Philip IV (1621-65), silver ducaton of 1653, Antwerp mint, second type. Obverse: draped and armored bust to right. Reverse: crowned arms, supported by two lions, Golden Fleece below. Weakly struck, very fine.)"

The regular type, issued 1636-65 from Antwerp (shown here, with hand mintmark) and Brussels, is scarce but not rare. The other provinces issued this type, including Artois, Flanders, Tournai and Luxembourg.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 32.48 g, 0.944 fine silver; this specimen is 32,40 g.

Catalog reference: G.H., 327-1b; Delm-284; W., 1001, Dav-4454, KM 72.1.
