Jean Elsen sale 127, lot 856
Brabant in 1559, from Shepherd's atlas

This specimen was lot 856 in Jean Elsen sale 127 (Brussels, December 2015), where it sold for €200 (about US$257 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Philippe IV (1621-1665), AR ducaton, 1647, Anvers. Deuxième type. D/ B. dr. et cuir. à d. R/ Ecu couronné, tenu par deux lions. En dessous, le bijou de la Toison d'or. Petits coups. Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, Philip IV, 1621-65, silver ducaton of 1647, Antwerp mint, second type. Obverse: draped and armored bust to right; reverse: crowned arms supported by two lions, the jewel of the Golden Fleece below. Minor nicks, very fine.)"

The regular type, issued 1636-65 from Antwerp (shown here, with hand mintmark) and Brussels, is scarce but not rare. The other provinces issued this type, including Artois, Flanders, Tournai and Luxembourg.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 32.48 g, 0.944 fine silver; this specimen is 32,44 g.

Catalog reference: G.H. 327-1b; Delm-284; W. 1001, Dav-4454, KM 72.1.
