The five centavos denomination was originally occupied by the silver medio dinero, struck 1863-1917. It was superseded by a copper-nickel coin in 1918, which was replaced by a brass type in 1942 when World War Two drove up the price of nickel. This type, issued 1966-68, comes with a few struck in silver for presentation. The second specimen was lot 1260 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 38 (Winter Park, FL, November 2025), where it sold for $2,400.
