Stack's Bowers 2022 NYINC sale, lot 7196

This specimen was lot 7196 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. 1/2 Groat, ND (1639-40). London Mint. Charles II. PCGS AU-53. A small coin with large eye appeal, this Charles II 1/2 Groat has lovely blue-green toning throughout and a very bold even strike free of any planchet issues. Only even circulation on both sides and no major distractions to mention. A very pleasing example!" Halfgroats, or silver twopence, were issued in small numbers since medieval times but their diminuitive size made them unpopular. The threepence, introduced by queen Elizabeth, displaced it but mintage continued until George III. It still appears in the Maundy sets. The halfgroats of Charles I are catalogued as S-2822 thru S-2836.
