from the Stack's Bowers February 2025 Collectors Choice sale, lot 10170
SB225-10170r.jpg

This specimen was lot 10170 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2025), where it sold for €105 (about US$110). The catalog description[1] noted, "DENMARK. 2 Skilling, 1629. Copenhagen Mint. Christian IV. NGC EF-45. From the L. E. Bruun Collection." Throughout the sixteenth century, one speciedaler was 96 skilling; at some point in the 1620's, it was raised to 144 skilling and then back to 96 skilling. When the dust had settled, the speciedaler, formerly four marks or 1⅓ krone, was now six marks or 1½ krone. This type was struck 1624-29; the prior dates have a clover mintmark. Christian IV (r. 1588-1648), king of Denmark and duke of Schleswig-Holstein, had a long but only moderately successful reign. His war with Sweden and his intervention in the Thirty Years War were costly and brought little gain.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.30 g, 0.281 fine silver, 18 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-89; Hede-134B; Sieg-35.2; Schou-55; Bruun-5576.
