This gold quarter ducat was minted in Salzburg in 1709. The specimen was lot 2608 in Goldberg sale 59 (Beverly Hills, May 2010), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Austria - Salzburg. ¼ Ducat, 1714. Franz Anton von Harrach, 1707-1727. Seated saint. Reverse: Arms. A couple planchet imperfections. NGC graded AU-55." The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. In the seventeenth century it was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. This type was struck 1709-19 and 1725.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 0.87 g, 0.986 fine gold, .027 troy oz AGW.
