This specimen was lot 20685 in Heritage sale 3010 (Boston, August 2010), where it sold for $1,150. The catalog description[1] noted, "Carlos III gold 8 Escudos 1774-JS Popayán, XF Details NGC (Mount Removed), a decent coin with no obvious flaws, small mount trace on the rim at 12 o'clock. From the Don Benito Collection of Hispanic Gold." The type was struck in Popayán in Nueva Granada (now Colombia) 1772-84 (later dates were 0.875 fine). Assayer JS is noted for 1772-76. Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) and its neighbor Popayán were the most prolific issuers of gold coins during the colonial period and this coin is common.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.901 fine gold, .784 troy oz AGW.
