Sincona sale 4, lot 5494

This specimen was lot 5494 in Sincona sale 4 (Zürich, October 2011), where it sold for 4,400 CHF (about US$5,853 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Basel, Stadt Dukat 1640. Ovales Wappen zwischen der Jahreszahl auf Kartusche. Rv. Nimbierter Doppeladler. Selten. Vorzüglich. (Switzerland, city of Basel, ducat of 1640. Obverse: oval arms divide date; reverse: nimbate double headed eagle. Rare, extremely fine.)"

This type is among the scarcer ducats of Basel tho none are common.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.5 g, 0.986 fine gold, .110 troy oz AGW, this specimen 3,44 g.
