Eliasberg lot 3453
Peru Nor 1838 8 escudos rev Eliasberg 3554.jpg

This specimen was lot 3554 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $9,775. The catalog description[1] noted,

"1838 M 8 escudos. Lima mint. North Peru. AU-55 (NGC). Standing Liberty with pole and cap, shield, legends around/crowned arms with furled flags, legends around, date below. Variety with dash between NOR PERUANO. Medium yellow gold, some reflectivity and lustre remains in protected areas of the obverse and across the reverse, traces of central granularity, scattered light handling marks and hairlines. thin scratch under POR. A very rare and important one year issue, with both die varieties called extremely rare by Calicó and the Karon cataloguer estimating a total population of 'less than ten specimens.' A handsome lightly circulated example of this historic issue, struck at Lima for the State of North Peru in the Peru-Bolivia Confederation. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942."
