Sedwick sale 34, lot 725
Sed34-0725r.jpg

This specimen was lot 725 in Sedwick sale 34 (Winter Park, FL, November 2023), where it sold for $1,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "Lima, Peru, cob 8 reales, 1751 R, rare. Typically chunky and flat near edge but with bold full date between pillars and most of cross with clear assayer to right, very lightly toned Fine+." Cob eight reales were struck at the Lima mint 1747-51 for Ferdinand VI of Spain and became the "pieces of eight" of pirate lore. Specimens with legible dates bring triple those without. Assayer "R" is listed for 1749-51. Milled gold coinage appeared in 1751, milled silver coinage the following year.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 26.98 grams.

Catalog reference: Cayón-10564, S-L23; KM-44; Cal-449.
