Heritage sale 3021, lot 22380
Peru 1749 8 escudos rev Heritage 3021-22380.jpg

This specimen was lot 22380 in Heritage sale 3021 (New York, January 2013), where it sold for $7,167.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Ferdinand VI gold Cob 8 Escudos 1749 L-R, XF45 NGC Eliasberg, lightly toned and original, nicely centered on both sides with clear date, mintmark and assayer details. Part of Ferdinand is visible in the reverse legend. An attractive example with an important pedigree." Gold coins from colonial Peru are much scarcer than those from Colombian mints. Assayer R is recorded for 1748-50. Cobs were struck at Lima until 1752, twenty years after Mexico City had switched to milled coinage.

Recorded mintage: 93,582 including 1749/8.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.917 fine gold, .798 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-10852, KM 47.
