Stack's Bowers November 2022 Collectors Choice sale, lot 72062
SB1122-72062r.jpg

This specimen was lot 72062 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $900. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. Cob 4 Reales, 1749-L. Lima Mint; Assayer Joseph Rodriguez de Carrasa (R). Ferdinand VI. PCGS VF-25. This cob exhibits somewhat rough surfaces and considerable flat striking, resulting in only fragments of the design surviving. The central date appears quite clearly, however, along with a portion of the mintmark to its right. That information is enough to attribute this crude yet charming piece. From the Pat Johnson Collection." This is one of the final dates for cobs from the Lima mint, which converted to pillar coinage in 1752. Assayer R is recorded for 1749-51.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.54 g, 0.917 fine silver, this specimen 13.64 g.

Catalog reference: Cayón-10484, KM-43; Cal-Type-49.
