Heritage sale 3010, lot 20567

This specimen was lot 20567 in Heritage sale 3010 (Boston, August 2010), where it sold for $1,552.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Ferdinand VII gold 8 Escudos 1814-FJ, AU55 NGC, a lustrous coin with well-defined details on the bust. The reverse is equally sharp and displays one faint adjustment mark. From the Don Benito Collection of Hispanic Gold." The specimen was one of a series struck 1811-17 during the reign of Ferdinand VII. It bears his name and the bust of Charles IV, who abdicated in 1808. The bust of Ferdinand appears on the eight reales and the two reales but not on any gold. This type is fairly common for Spanish colonial gold.

Recorded mintage: 29,000.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.875 fine gold, .761 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-16438, KM 78.
