Ponterio sale 164, lot 950

This specimen was lot 950 in Ponterio sale 164 (New York, January 2012), where it sold for $6,325. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. 8 Escudos, 1716-M. Philip V (1700-46). Light evidence of rim filing. Very attractive, NGC AU Details--Rim Filing." Cob eight escudos were struck at the Lima mint 1701-47 for Philip V of Spain and became the "doubloons" of pirate lore.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.917 fine gold, .798 troy oz AGW.
