This specimen was lot 25215 in Heritage sale 3024 (Chicago, April 2013), where it sold for $6,462.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Felipe V gold Cob 8 Escudos 1717 L-M, XF, Pillars with date/Cross of Jerusalem, a pleasing example of this large gold type with the central detail being essentially perfectly centered on the obverse and a full cross on the reverse. A tiny test scrape of no visual significance is noted on the edge at 4 o'clock." Cob eight escudos were struck at the Lima mint 1701-47 for Philip V of Spain and became the "doubloons" of pirate lore.
