This specimen was lot 32100 in Heritage sale 3067 (Long Beach, September 2018), where it sold for $7,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "Peru: Philip V gold 8 Escudos 1715 L-M AU Details (Obverse Damage) NGC, Lima mint. A very scarce date and highly desirable despite the obverse scrape partially affecting one of the two visible dates." Cob eight escudos were struck at the Lima mint 1701-47 for Philip V of Spain and became the "doubloons" of pirate lore.
