Peru 1715-L M 8 reales
This specimen was lot 678 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 39 (Winter Park, FL, May 2026), where it sold for $1,440. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU, Lima, cob 8 reales, 1715 M, row of three dots at top, rare, ex-Ugaz. Full but slightly doubled pillars-and-waves and cross-lions-castles, two dates (including in legend) and assayers, all three mintmarks, lightly toned AXF with golden hues, rare date (first we have offered at auction and the only example we have traced in recent years). Pedigreed to the Jorge Ugaz Collection." Cob eight reales were struck at the Lima mint 1701-46 for Philip V of Spain and became the "pieces of eight" of pirate lore.
