from the Stack's Bowers 2020 NYINC sale, lot 22277
Bolivia SB120-22277r.jpg

This specimen was lot 22277 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $432. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA. Cob 8 Reales, 1685-VR. Potosi Mint. Charles II. PCGS EF-45 Gold Shield. Choice for the type, with pleasing surfaces and three visible dates (2 of which are partial)." Cob eight reales were struck at Potosi for Charles II 1667-1701 and are generally very crude. A few presentation pieces, round and fully struck, were made every year; these are today called "royals" altho it is uncertain if they were actually presented to the king in Madrid. The surviving "royals" today are nearly always holed or plugged as they were saved as part of a necklace.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.931 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Cayón-7608, KM-M26; Cal-Type 75 # 323.
