This specimen was lot 21065 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $84,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "Beautifully Toned Pre-Union 5 Guineas of Anne. GREAT BRITAIN. 5 Guineas, 1705. Anne (1702-14). PCGS AU-55 Secure Holder. VERY RARE. Two year Pre-Union of England and Scotland type with separate arms for said countries and rose at center. The first year of issue for this type. Choice example with reflective surfaces and rich orange toning. Minimal marks to detract from the originality of this important piece. Fantastic eye appeal, clearly an example which sat for a prolonged period of time undisturbed. Ex: Auctions by Bowers and Merena, Inc. August 9-12, 1989 Lot #2413 (with lot tag)." Five guineas were issued only sporadically in the eighteenth century and all are rare. Amazingly, two types are listed for 1706, the other (KM 521) showing the arms of England and Scotland on one shield on the reverse.
