Stack's Bowers 2025 ANA sale, lot 43198
SB825-43198r.jpg

This specimen was lot 43198 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Oklahoma City, OK, August 2025), where it sold for $7,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. National Convention. Ecu de 6 Livres, Year II/1793-T. Nantes Mint. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, VF Details. Despite some obvious circulation and noted cleaning, this type remains excessively difficult to acquire, with Margolis writing that it is "...an exceedingly rare mint for this type; previously unknown to me, and unknown to Sobin." From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Patrick Guillard at NYINC on 11 June 1994 for $950)." When this coin was struck at Nantes, the ancien régime had disappeared with the trial and execution of the king, who had appeared on the previous type (KM 615). In 1793, as invading armies approached from all directions, the Committee of Public Safety would initiate the Terror. In 1795, following the introduction of the metric system, the first five francs would be issued.

Recorded mintage: unknown, a rare mint.

Specification: 29.48 g, 0.917 fine silver, 39 mm diameter, lettered edge.

Catalog reference: Dav-1336; KM-624.9; Gad-58.
