This specimen was lot 2594 in UBS sale 83 (Zürich, September 2009) where it sold for CHF 750 (about US$862 including buyer's fee). The catalog description noted,
"Taler 1741. Kl. Schrötlingsf., sonst vorzüglich-FDC," (Basel 1741 thaler, AU-uncirculated).
The mythical creature on the reverse is a basilisk, the badge of the city of Basel. The bishopric of Basel, which surrounded the town, also struck coins, mostly conventional portrait types. The city, however, struck a series of spectacular "city view" thalers, of which this type is among the more available. This type is accompanied by a very rare double thaler (KM 150) and several half thalers, including KM-147.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, this specimen 27,30 g.
Catalog reference: D.T. 743, Wint. 109, HMZ 2-99c, KM 149, Davenport 1750.
