CNG Lissner collection, lot 925

This specimen was lot 925 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $242. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN, Reino de España. Isabel II. 1833-1868. CU 4 Maravedis. Segovia mint; im: aqueduct. Dated 1849. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 65 RB. Gem almost full red with hints of toning on the high points. One small patina spot in the reverse. A superb lustrous specimen. The only example graded for the date. Only one graded higher for the type." The Spanish mints feature large issues of a variety of copper coins which did not circulate at all in the Spanish American colonies. In the predecimal system which obtained until 1847, 34 maravedis = one real of silver. This four maravedis was worth 2/17 of a real; history does not record the reason for the odd division. This type was struck 1837-50 from Segovia, Jubia and Barcelona, with Segovia being the most common. An 1849/49 double date exists.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a common date.

Specification: copper, 6.05 g, 22.0-24.5 mm diameter, this specimen Ø22 mm, 5.10 g, 12h axis.

Catalog reference: Cayón-16652, KM 530.3.
