This specimen was lot 2054 in Sincona sale 59 (Zürich, October 2019), where it sold for 1,500 CHF (about US$1,817 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SPAIN | Königreich, Fernando VII. 1808-1833. 80 Reales 1823 B-SP, Barcelona. Sehr selten in dieser Erhaltung. Fast FDC. (kingdom of Spain, Ferdinand VII, 1808-33, eighty reales of 1823, Barcelona mint. Very rare in this condition, About uncirculated.)"
When the Bourbons were restored, they continued to strike this denomination 1822-48 simultaneously with the old two escudos, which is the same size. This type was struck 1822-23 at Madrid, Barcelona (shown here) and Seville. The obverse legend refers to king Ferdinand, "by the grace of God and the Constitution," a constitution he was compelled to grant and which he violated at every opportunity. His despotic rule combined that incompetence and brutality later displayed by countless Latin American dictators.
