Heritage sale 3019, lot 25579
Spain 1626 50 reales rev Heritage 3019-25579.jpg

This specimen was lot 25579 in Heritage sale 3019 (Chicago, April 2012), where it sold for $18,400. The catalog description[1] noted, "Rare and Popular Spanish 50 Reales - 'Cincuentin' Felipe IV 50 Reales (Cincuentin) 1626A Segovia, XF Details, Edge Damage NGC. Included is the original sales receipt showing the purchase of this piece in 1958 from Marshall Field & Co., in Chicago, Illinois, for $250. Bold details on both the obverse and reverse, with noticeable rim bumps on both sides. The most available of this series of huge silver issues, only 300 pieces were struck of this date with less than 20 pieces extant. All were made in an approximately three week period in July 1626 from silver supplied by a wealthy Spaniard. Very rare, and long considered one of the premier rarities of Spanish numismatics." This massive type usually sells for substantially more than the price realized in this sale. Bidders may have been held back by the edge damage. Fifty reales were struck on occasion as presentation pieces 1609-82.

Recorded mintage: c.300.

Specification: 170 g, 0.931 fine silver, 5.08 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: Calico Type 58, No. 239, Cayón-6584, KM81.2, Dav-LS567.
