This coin was minted in Lima, Peru, of a type issued 1772-89. This specimen was lot 21663 in Heritage sale 3010 (Boston, August 2010), where it sold for $1,638.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "Carlos III gold 8 Escudos 1780-MI, XF45 NGC, an attractive coin with old-time patina in the legends. Very scarce. From the Don Benito Collection of Hispanic Gold." Later issues of this type (1785-89) were struck in gold lowered to 0.875 fine.
