Peru 1780-L MJ 8 reales
This specimen was lot 41256 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Costa Mesa, CA, August 2021), where it sold for $1,680. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. 8 Reales, 1780-LM MJ. Lima Mint. Charles III. NGC MS-62. . The finest of seven graded for the date at NGC, with only one other even attaining Mint State status (MS-60), this argent specimen dazzles with a good deal of brilliance and fairly clean fields. For completeness, a die crack is noted in front of the king's bust, as well as one running through a portion of the obverse legend. Ex: Ponterio 148 (1/2009) Lot # 1939." This type was struck 1772-89 for Charles III and supplanted the pillar dollar. A slight debasement accompanied the design change. Assayer MJ is recorded for 1773-80.
