This specimen was lot 73126 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2022), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA. 1/4 Real, 1796-PTS. Potosi Mint. Charles IV. NGC EF-45. A pleasing example of the type, from the first year of issue. The strike detail is good, with honest, even wear, and the surfaces are pleasantly toned." This is an example of a type struck 1796-1809 at Potosi, Bolivia (then called Upper Peru). Silver quarter reales are also known from Mexico, Guatemala, Chile, Peru and Colombia. After independence, production of quarter reales would not resume until 1852.
