Bolivia 1753-P C 4 reales

Sedwick Treasure Auction 35, lot 1084

This specimen was lot 1084 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 35 (Winter Park, FL, May 2024), where it sold for $360. The catalog description^[1] noted, "BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 4 reales, 1753 C. Chunky flan with clear date between full pillars, bold center of cross, AU- with multi-color toning." This type was struck 1748-60 and represents a late issue of cobs. Mexico switched to milled coinage in 1732 and Lima followed in 1750-51. The Guatemala mint, opened in 1732 with equipment discarded by the Mexico City mint, struggled with cob-like coins in the early years of its existence, achieving fully round coinage in 1753. Assayer "C" is recorded for 1753-54 and shared his duties with assayer "q" both years.
