Stack's Bowers 2022 ANA sale, lot 34334
SB822-34334r.jpg

This specimen was lot 34334 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2022), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA. Cob 1/2 Real, ND (1574-76)-P R. Potosi Mint; Rincon, assayer. Philip II. NGC VF-30. Remaining enchanting wholesome and free from issue, this minor, emanating from the popular assayer Rincon, offers deep gray surfaces and some darker hues in the recesses. Though a fair amount of handling is observed, it nevertheless stands far superior to the many others of its class." Altho there seems to have been a substantial issue of half real cobs in the early days of the Potosí mint, the denomination was largely neglected thereafter. The next half real we have on this site is from Philip III.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.69 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 1.59 g.

Catalog reference: Cayón-3410, KM-1.1; Cal-135.
