Sedwick sale 27, lot 533

The first specimen was lot 33346 in Heritage sale 3076 (Long Beach, CA, September 2019), where it sold for $990. The catalog description[1] noted, "Bolivia: Philip II Cob 8 Reales ND (1574-1586) P-B AU55 NGC, Potosí mint. The single finest of the type seen to-date by NGC, with the next finest being an XF45. Very rarely found so well preserved, the appearance surprisingly "regular" for the method of manufacture with strong central details, only a minor die shift on both faces reminding the viewer that this is a cob." The second specimen was lot 533 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 27 (Winter Park, FL, May 2020), where it sold for $654.50. The catalog description[2] noted, "Potosí, Bolivia, cob 8 reales, Philip II, assayer B (2nd period, "Great Module"). Typically very broad flan extending past the outer borders, full legends and crown and inner details, lightly toned, AU details with light surface porosity." The Potosí mint was the second mint in the western hemisphere to date its products. Dating began in 1617.

Recorded mintage: unknown.
