This specimen was lot 4342 in Künker sale 335 (Osnabruck, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €700 (about US$916 including buyer's fees). Künker sale 335, lot 4342

This specimen was lot 4342 in Künker sale 335 (Osnabrück, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €700 (about US$916 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SACHSEN, SACHSEN-GOTHA, HERZOGTUM, AB 1672 SACHSEN, Friedrich II. 1691-1732. Reichstaler 1717, Gotha. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Germany, duchy of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, Frederick II, 1691-1732, thaler of 1717, Gotha mint. Very fine to extremely fine.)"

On the occasion of the bicentennial of the Reformation, the duke also issued a 1/24 thaler (KM 191), 1/12 thaler (KM 192), quarter thaler (KM 194), half thaler (KM 196), several thalers (KM 197, 198, 199) and 1½ thaler (KM 201) and ducat (KM 203) and double ducat (KM 205) and 17 ducat (KM 207). For some reason, this coin no longer appears in the SCWC altho it appeared in prior editions. Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg was not the only state to mark the event; see this thaler from Stolberg.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 28.96 g.
