This specimen was lot 30244 in Heritage sale 3037 (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $3,760. The catalog description[1] noted, "Papal States. Pius IX gold 10 Scudi 1850-R Anno IV MS62 NGC. A brilliant specimen with classic, honey-gold tone and wholly lustrous fields. Due to a bold strike, the devices are fully-raised and somewhat frosty in appearance. Minor surface abrasions are present, however not uncommon to the issue. Even so, a coin of this select quality is rarely encountered in the marketplace and at present time, this is the only certified example of this date. From The Alexander Collection." This type is listed for 1850 and 1856 and was struck in Rome. In the reform of 1834, the medieval grossi, giulii and testone were dropped and 100 baiocchi = one scudo. In 1866, the currency was reformed to use centesimi and lire in order to match that of the surrounding kingdom of Italy. In 1870, the Papal States were occupied and annexed by the kingdom of Italy and coinage ceased until 1929.
Recorded mintage: 5,875 (years IV and V).
Specification: 17.33 g, 0.900 fine gold, .501 troy oz AGW.
