Künker sale 403, lot 1704

This specimen was lot 1704 in Künker sale 403 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €750 (about US$984 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"PAPST PIUS IX., 1846-1878. Prägungen des Papstes Pius IX. Aus der Münzstätte Rom von seiner Rückkehr 1850 bis zur Münzreform vom 14. April 1858. Scudo romano AN IV/1850 R, Rom. Stempelschneider Niccolò Cerbara. Herrliche Patina, Erstabschlag, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (Papal States, Pius IX, 1846-78, scudo Romano of the year 4, 1850, Rome mint, struck in accordance with the reform of 1850. Superb patina, first strike, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

The first coinage reform in the Papal States was implemented in the early 1830's during the reign of Gregory XVI (1831-46). All the doppie, zecchini, guili, testoni, etc., were dropped in favor of a silver scudo (shown here) divided into one hundred baiocchi. Gold one, 2½, five and ten scudi were minted at Rome and Bologna until 1865. This type was struck at Rome and Bologna 1846-50 and 1853-56. Issues of 1850 and later deleted the engraver's name below the bust.
