Sincona sale 73, lot 1501

This specimen was lot 1501 in Sincona sale 73 (Zürich, November 2021), where it sold for 180 CHF (about US$232 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALY | Vatican - Church State. Pius IX. 1846-1878. 50 Baiocchi 1850 / Anno V, Roma. Vorzüglich. (Extremely fine.)"

This type, struck 1850 and 1853 at Rome and 1854-57 at Bologna, is not listed as rare but seldom turns up. The edge lettering was updated mid-year on the anniversary of the reign of the pope, hence both "Anno IV" and "Anno V" are mentioned for 1850. The fifty baiocchi was one half of a scudo. The coinage was reformed to use centesimi and lire in 1867 but the Papal States were annexed by Italy in 1870 and the series ended.

Recorded mintage: 8,961.

Specification: 13.44 grams, 0.900 fine silver, this specimen 13.45 g.

Catalog reference: KM 1357, Mont. 134. Pagani 400, Ber-3310.
