Sincona sale 20, lot 4330

This specimen was lot 4330 in Sincona sale 20 (Zürich, October 2014), where it sold for CHF 350 (about US$439 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "50 Baiocchi 1854, AN IX. Bologna. Selten. Fast vorzüglich-vorzüglich. (fifty baiocchi of 1854, Bologna mint, rare, extremely fine or better.)" This type, struck 1850-57, is not listed as rare but seldom turns up. The edge lettering was updated mid-year on the anniversary of the reign of the pope. The fifty baiocchi was one half of a scudo. The coinage was reformed to use centesimi and lire in 1867 but the Papal States were annexed by Italy in 1870 and the series ended.
