Papal States 1854-R scudo Dav-194
The first specimen was lot 5034 in Goldberg sale 69 (Los Angeles, May, 2012), where it sold for $483. The catalog description [1] noted, "Italian States - Papal/Roman States. Scudo, 1854-R. Pius IX, 1846-1878. Bust left. Reverse: Value and date within wreath. NGC graded MS-62." This type, struck 1850-56 at Rome (shown here) and Bologna, is not listed as rare but seldom turns up. The edge lettering was updated mid-year on the anniversary of the reign of the pope, but only "Anno IX" is mentioned for 1854. The coinage was reformed to use centesimi and lire in 1867 but the Papal States were annexed by Italy in 1870 and the series ended.
Recorded mintage: 146,000.
Specification: 26.87 g, 0.900 fine silver.
Catalog reference: Dav-194; KM-1336.2; Pagani-396, Ber-3309.
