Künker sale 403, lot 1708

This specimen was lot 1708 in Künker sale 403 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €550 (about US$722 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"PAPST PIUS IX., 1846-1878. Prägungen des Papstes Pius IX. Aus der Münzstätte Rom von seiner Rückkehr 1850 bis zur Münzreform vom 14. April 1858. Ku.-5 Baiocchi ANN VIII/1854 R, Rom. Stempelglanz. (Papal States, Pius IX, 1846-78, copper five baiocchi of year 8, 1854, Rome mint, in accordance with the reform of 1850. Uncirculated.)"

The first coinage reform in the Papal States was implemented in the early 1830's during the reign of Gregory XVI (1831-46). All the doppie, zecchini, guili, testoni, etc., were dropped in favor of a silver scudo divided into one hundred baiocchi. Gold one, , five and ten scudi were minted at Rome and Bologna until 1865. This date is known with regnal years 8 and 9.
