Sincona sale 90, lot 1417

This specimen was lot 1417 in Sincona sale 90 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 2,000 CHF (about US$2,643 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALIEN Vatikan - Kirchenstaat, Pius IX. 1846-1878. 10 Scudi 1856 / Anno XI R, Roma. Sehr selten. Nur 2'483 Exemplare geprägt. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Feine Goldpatina. (Italy, Papal States, Pius IX, 1846-70, ten scudi of 1856, Rome mint. Very rare. Only 2,483 pieces struck, Very fine-extremely fine, Nice gold toning.)"

This type is listed for 1850 and 1856 and was struck in Rome. In the reform of 1834, the medieval grossi, giulii and testone were dropped and 100 baiocchi = one scudo. In 1866, the currency was reformed to use centesimi and lire in order to match that of the surrounding kingdom of Italy. In 1870, the Papal States were occupied and annexed by the kingdom of Italy and coinage ceased until 1929.
