SB822-30434r.jpg

This specimen was lot 30434 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2022), where it sold for $720. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxe-Weimar. 1/2 Taler, 1585. Friedrich Wilhelm & Johann. PCGS AU-58. An EXTREMELY RARE type, the present specimen displays a strong strike and rich details that have only been slightly affected by wear. Nearly fully lustrous, this piece does not lack for beauty, and demonstrates much commendability. The finest, and one of only two, certified by PCGS." The duchy of Saxe-Weimar was created and fell extinct three times. This issue is from the first creation, "Saxe-Old Weimar". This type was struck 1582-1585, with the 1585 being a rare date.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: KM MB45, Schnee-239.
