This specimen was lot 3725 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $675.63. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxe-Old-Weimar. Taler, 1587. Friedrich Wilhelm I with Johann III (1573-1602). NGC AU-58. First year mintage of this series (1587-94). Dark iridescent toning. Nice details. From the Rockaway Collection." This type was struck 1587-94. This branch of the Wettins fell extinct in 1605. The division of Erfurt in 1572 permanently splintered Ernestine Thuringia into fragments which were not reunited until the establishment of the Weimar Republic in 1920.
