This specimen was lot 1854 in Sincona sale 66 (Zürich, October 2020), where it sold for 800 CHF (about US$1,053 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"HEILIGES ROMISCH REICH, Joseph II. 1765-1790. 1/4 Dukat 1772 GA, Karlsburg. Münzmeister Anton Joseph Hammerschmidt, Wardein Alexander de Gogia. Selten. Vorzüglich. Feine Kratzer auf der Vorderseite. (Austria, Joseph II, 1765-90, quarter ducat of 1772, Karlsburg mint. Rare, Extremely fine, Minor hairlines on obverse.)"
The Karlsburg mint issued a whole series of fractional ducats, including, one eighth, quarter and half ducats. This type was struck 1768, 1772, 1776, 1778, 1780. Unlike the Empire, where Maria Theresia had to rule thru her husband Franz (and later her son Joseph), she was queen of Hungary and Transylvania outright.
Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce.
Specification: 0.88 g, 0.986 fine gold; this specimen 0.85 g.
