Stack's Bowers October 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 75771
SB1024-75771r.jpg

This specimen was lot 75771 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2024), where it sold for $2,400. The catalog description[1] noted, "TRANSYLVANIA. Ducat, 1771. Karlsburg (Alba Iulia) Mint. Maria Theresa. PCGS AU-58. AGW: 0.1109 oz. The sole example graded by PCGS with two in the same grade from NGC. Well-struck and nicely detailed with smooth, rich golden surfaces. A bright and enticing issue." The Hapsburgs reconquered Hungary from the Turks in the 1680's and ended Transylvanian autonomy. This type is listed for 1765-80 and shows the veiled head used after the death of Francis I. Unlike the Empire, where Maria Theresia had to rule thru her husband Franz (and later her son Joseph), she was queen of Hungary outright.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.5 g, 0.986 fine gold.

Catalog reference: Fr-544; KM-646.
