This type was struck 1613-28 in Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel and is among the more common thalers of the period. The "wild man" design was popular in Brunswick and Hannover at the time and appeared on many different thalers and minors. Duke Friedrich Ulrich ruled 1613-34. This specimen was lot 796 in Sincona sale 11 (Zürich, May 2013), where it sold for 200 CHF (about US$248 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND -Wolfenbüttel Friedrich Ulrich, 1613-1634. Taler 1618. Henkelspur? Sehr schön. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel, Frederick Ulrich, 1613-34, thaler of 1618. Perhaps mounted, very fine.)"
