Künker sale 400, lot 5

This specimen was lot 5 in Künker sale 400 (Berlin, February 2024), where it sold for €5,500 (about US$7,135 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBUTTEL, Friedrich Ulrich, 1613-1634. Löser zu 3 Reichstalern 1618, Goslar oder Zellerfeld. Mit Wertpunze; Münzmeister Heinrich Oeckeler. Der geharnischte Herzog reitet r. mit hohem Hut, Kommandostab und umgelegtem, wehenden Mantel//Fünffach behelmtes, 11feldiges Wappen, zu den Seiten je ein wilder Mann mit Baumstamm, unten Kartusche mit eingepunzter Wertzahl. Von größter Seltenheit. Hübsche Patina, üblicher Stempelfehler, sehr schön. Exemplar der Auktion Frankfurter Münzhandlung 137, Frankfurt/Main 1991, Nr. 1268. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, Frederick Ulrich, 1613-34, triple thaler of 1618, Gosler or Zellerfeld mint, with value punched in. Obverse: the armored, mantled and hatted duke rides right with a baton; reverse: five helmeted manifold arms supported by wild men, cartouche at bottom with value stamped in. Extremely rare, handome patina, slightly doubled, very fine.)"

This type of 1617-18 was issued in several varieties, including Dav-LS38a/LM 71, Dav-LS38/KM 72, Dav-LS38b/KM 85.1 (shown here) and Dav-LS38c/KM 85.2. It accompanied a quadruple thaler. This example has a conspicuous raised lump on the obverse, probably from a chipped die.
