CNG Lissner sale, lot 761

This specimen was lot 761 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $2,722.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "NORWAY. Karl IV. 1859-1872. AR 24 Skilling. Kongsberg mint. Dated 1865. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 63. Light iridescent tone." This one year type is the last of a denomination first issued in 1819. It was worth one fifth of a specie daler. This specimen sold for three times the catalog value. Norway was at this time under Swedish rule; after a century of tumultuous marriage, the Norwegians obtained a divorce in 1907 and have been independent since.

Recorded mintage: 79,000.

Specification: 5.78 g, 0.875 fine silver, this specimen Ø24 mm, 5.77 g, 6h axis.

Catalog reference: KM 327; Y 8a.
