Aureo sale 232, lot 181

This is an eight reales struck in Peru during the reign of Ferdinand VI (1746-1759). There are a host of varieties for this year reported by Gilboy[1], including and overdate, two styles of the digit 5, and a normal (non-anagram) 'M' in the mintmark. The pictured coin is the normal issue, and is listed by Gilboy[1] as 'uncommon'. It is one of only two years displaying the assayer combination 'JD'.

The second specimen shown was lot 181 in Aureo y Calicó sale 232 (Barcelona, March 2011), where it sold for 1,350 euros (about US$2,227 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"Fernando VI (1746-1759). 1754. Lima. JD. 8 reales. Columnario. Punto sobre las dos LMA. Bellísima. Brillo original. Preciosa pátina. Muy rara así. S/C-. (Ferdinand VI, 1746-59, eight reales of 1754, Lima mint, pillar type, dot over both mintmarks. Of the highest beauty, original luster, very rare thus, about uncirculated).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.917 fine silver, 0.798 troy oz ASW, this specimen: 26.92 grams.

Catalog reference: Cayón-10586, KM-55.1, Cal-310.
