Peru 1754-L JD 1/2 real
This specimen was lot 2108 in Sedwick Auction 37 (Winter Park, FL, May 2025), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU, Lima, pillar ½ real, Ferdinand VI, 1754 JD, ex-O'Brien. This is probably the scarce 'dotted mintmark' die, even though the dot is too weak to be discerned, as is also the crossbar inside the M of the mintmark (which Gilboy called normal M). VF with a few old marks in the richly toned fields. Pedigreed to the John O'Brien Collection, with his tag." This type, the first milled half real of Peru, was struck for Ferdinand VI 1752-60. It is not rare but many of the dates are very scarce compared to their Mexican equivalents.
