Künker sale 353, lot 3997

This specimen was lot 3997 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €550 (about US$766 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich Wilhelm III. 1797-1840. Taler 1815, B. Geprägt auf einem kleinen Schrötling. R Min. justiert, vorzüglich. Exemplar der Auktion Möller 59, Kassel 2012, Nr. 611. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick William III, 1797-1840, thaler of 1815, struck on a tight planchet. Rare, minor adjustments, extremely fine.)"

During the disasters of the Napoleonic Wars, the Breslau mint was occupied by the French 1808-13, during which time it struck no coinage. It reopened with the coming of peace and struck this thaler 1815-16 before closing again.

Recorded mintage: 554,000 for 1815-16, a scarce date.
